Wintersun: greeting the seasons (interview w/ Jukka Koskinen)

New album and a coming to Portugal. Nothing better than getting in touch with the band to anticipate both occasions! “The Forest Seasons” is the title of Wintersun’s new album and it is the bassist Jukka Koskinen who does the honours. The following conversation aims to foresee the Finns’ third work in detail (though no one has heard the music), as well as to promote the crowdfunding campaign and, of course, predict what will be a Wintersun concert.

«This album has the ingredients to please people from different music genres – it’s like beauty and the beast in one package!»

For the people who haven’t read the news about Wintersun, what can you tell about the band’s next album? Any cool details you’d like to advance?
The coolest thing is probably that we are releasing the new album by a total surprise for everyone! An album that has four totally different styles of songs, from slower atmospheric moods to harsh darkened black metal. This album has the ingredients to please people from different music genres – it’s like beauty and the beast in one package!
We’ve been planning this release and the crowdfunding for a longer time that actually started growing after our dear fans suggested that we should do a crowdfunding. Now it’s the time to take the band to the next level and really start progressing with future Wintersun albums. We wan’t out from the current situation where our resources aren’t enough to produce our albums with the true vision we have. All the details will be revealed in our crowdfunding campaign starting on March 1st.

Some people might not understand the fact that Wintersun’s next album is Vivaldi but it is not at the same time. Would you like to explain?
Well, our new album has nothing to do with Vivaldi. Only that our new album, called “The Forest Season”, has four tracks of each season of a year like on Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons”. There’s the connection. Vivaldi inspired to write about the different seasons from a forest aspect that surrounds us everywhere in Finland – the country is like a big forest.

«All the songs on this album are way more epic and dynamic than before.»

That connection with Vivaldi means that Wintersun are going even more epic this time?
Yes absolutely, though in a different way. The four tracks on the album – spring, summer, autumn and winter songs – are totally different from each other but merge nicely together forming a great whole. The spring song, “Awaken from the Dark Slumber”, is about when the forest wakes up from winter’s cold grasp, and of course how you, yourself, wake up from a sleep that you have been in your life. This song is very uplifting though it has a very dark first half, presenting the awakening. The summer song, “The Forest that Weeps”, is a very massive male choir boosted song with summer’s energy and even the harshness that can happen in north, grey summers. The autumn song, “Eternal Darkeness”, is by far the most brutal song Wintersun has ever made. This monster is about all dying, like in the autumn. Last but not least the winter song, “Loneliness”, is a slower tempo song with the most beautiful clean vocals Jari has ever made. A pure love song about loneliness, [it’s] melancholic though somehow [there’s a] peaceful feel in the song.
The sound of Wintersun has always been [a big] contrast from slow to fast in a song. This time we are staying truer to the feel of a certain song without going too progressive like before. All the songs on this album are way more epic and dynamic than before. They just sound massive!

You have started a campaign which is a good way to get funding whilst perking fans. What are your expectations for this campaign and what will be the simplest perk and the most expensive one?
Crowdfunding in general is very transparent and honest which is that we like to do and to be towards our fans. We are offering only one perk but an epic one as you might have guessed. It’s a multi content package including several items such as the new album “The Forest Seasons”. We wanted to build a package with a reasonable price and to offer this to our patient fans as a thank you since the money it’s worth is less than half normally.
We truly hope we can make this work together and start building the Wintersun headquarters, our own studio, to make future albums possible with the original vision and [thus] end the unfortunate compromises that we’ve had to make in the past. The crowdfunding will be a win-win situation for us and equally for the fans!

Next August you will be playing in Portugal at Vagos Metal Fest, it’s like our little Wacken – even the name of the town is similar. By that time, will you bring full promotion for the album? And I won’t ask about your expectations about the country and crowd, instead I’ll ask what can we expect from Wintersun?
First time in Portugal! Absolutely great to have us in Vagos. Expect the unexpected from us, that is new music from the new album with a new fresh look of the band. The stage presentation looks amazing, like the new album cover presents, and we want to share this with you guys. That’s what we love to do – making music and sharing great moments together at live shows. Good times coming ahead in the summer!
